Kristen Stewart Told To Stop ‘Holding Girlfriend’s Hand In Public’ For Marvel Role
While speaking with Harper’s Bazaar, actress Kristen Stewart recalls the time an industry insider told her to stop “holding [her] girlfriend’s hand in public” if she ever wanted an opportunity to star in a Marvel movie.
Stewart began by explaining, “You want to preserve your career and your success and your productivity, and there are people in the world who don’t like you, and they don’t like that you date girls, and they don’t like that you don’t identify as a quote-unquote ‘lesbian,’ but you also don’t identify as a quote-unquote ‘heterosexual.’ And people like to know stuff, so what the f**k are you?'”
Further explaining how this rejection’s nearly cost her career opps, she adds, “I have fully been told, ‘If you just like do yourself a favor, and don’t go out holding your girlfriend’s hand in public, you might get a Marvel movie.’ I don’t want to work with people like that.”
In addition to this instance, Stewart’s previously spoke on her sexual fluidity in the past; more recently with Associated Press, where she explained, “I felt this huge responsibility, one that I was really genuinely worried about, if I wasn’t able to say one way or the other, then was I sort of like forsaking a side. If you were to have this conversation with someone in high school, they’d probably roll their eyes and go, ‘Why are you complicating everything so much?’ … Just sort of do what you want to do,” she continued. “It’s really nice.”
