Man Arrested After Trying To Buy Explosives For Attack On Times Square
A queens man has been arrested after allegedly planning to set an explosive device off in Times Square.
NBC News reports that the 22-year-old suspect reportedly attempted to purchase guns that had their serial numbers removed, grenades and other weapons for the attack.
Ashiqul Alam was taken into custody by the Joint Terrorism Task Force, he has been under surveillance radar for a while and is expected to appear in a federal court in Brooklyn.
Police believe that he is working alone, and that the public is no longer in danger.
Sources close to the situation state that the suspect had allegedly spoke about his urges to use a suicide bomb vest and explosives on Times Square. He also showed interest in inflicting a mass shooting on the famous area.
Police are reported to have set up an undercover operation and arrested the suspect when he allegedly went to purchase the weapons for his plan.
His threats have been labeled as “aspirational.”
