A man covered in blood walked into a Pennsylanvia hospital and admitted to fatally stabbing his boyfriend.
Authorities said Matthew Van Zandt walked into St Luke’s Hospital in Allentown early Wednesday needing medical attention for a cut hand. He then informed an emergency room nurse that he had fatally stabbed his boyfriend. The nurse said he was “saturated in blood’ that he said didn’t belong to him but from a dead person, recorded WFMZ citing police records. He also told hospital security that the knife he used in the slaying was in his backpack.
Authorities originally received a report of a domestic dispute on Wednesday and went to the Lancaster home before 1 am. They left after receiving no response. However, they had to return two hours later following Van Zandt’s confession and found Ian Shannon lying naked on a bed. The room where the killing happened was reportedly soaked in blood. Police said the victim was “obviously deceased” and was stabbed and cut “numerous” times. The neighbor who made the report told officers he heard loud screams and that Shannon and VanZandt got into domestic disputes regularly.
According to Lancaster County District Attorney Craig Steadman, VanZandt and Shannon got into an argument about their breakup prior to the attack. In his interview with police, VanZandt said that he told his boyfriend that morning he wanted to end their relationship, according to a criminal complaint cited by PennLive.com. He said Shannon then began to mock him and VanZandt grabbed a pocket knife and stabbed him in the face, neck, and torso. Officers described VanZandt as “calm and monotone” during the interview.
Van Zandt is reportedly no stranger to breaking the law as court records show he was previously charged with shoplifting, DUI and disorderly conduct. He was charged with homicide in the death of his partner.
