A man who strangled a 19-year-old college student because she ignored his catcalls was charged and held without bail on Tuesday.

USA Today reports that Donald Thurman, 26, has been accused of first-degree murder and sexual assault after he raped and killed Ruth George. Her body was discovered on Saturday in the backseat of her car on campus.

Thurman reportedly became enraged that George ignored his catcalls, so he stalked her into the parking garage and attacked her. Ruth’s family reported her missing on Saturday and police located her with her phones tracking device.

Assistant State’s Attorney James Murphy said that,

“The defendant came up behind the victim, grabbed her around the neck from behind, and put her into a chokehold,” Murphy added. “With his arms still wrapped around the victim’s neck the defendant dragged the victim from the ground and he opened her back seat car door.”

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office determined her death to be from strangulation.

“All of us are devastated by the loss of Ruth George, a member of our Honors College and a talented kinesiology student with dreams and aspirations to become a health professional and help others. Our thoughts, our hearts and our condolences are with her family and friends during this trying period,” UIC Chancellor Michael D. Amiridis said.
