An Australian man decided to remove the inside of his ears removed as a form of body modification.
According to the Daily Mail, the young man had the procedure done by body modification artist Chai Maibert. Maibert shared on his social media page that he performed a ‘conch removal’ on the man’s ears. The concha is the central part of the outer ear and Maibert emphasized that the procedure does not result in deafness.
‘It might impair your ability to hear the direction of sound for the first week or two until your mind has adjusted to your new ears. Hearing from behind will in fact improve.’
Maibert runs a body modification studio in Stockholm, Sweden and is known globally for his work but the ‘conch removal’ procedure has led to a lot of criticism from his fans on Facebook.
They were also skeptical of Maibert’s claim that the man’s hearing would not be affected since the concha collects sound then travels through the inner ear to the eardrum. The shape of the ear is also essential for hearing since it allows an individual to determine where the sound is located.
