Man Who Punched 11-Year-Old Black Girl In The Face Sentenced To Racial Justice Workshop

The North Carolina man who punched an 11-year-old black girl in a viral video was sentenced to participate in a racial justice workshop as a part of his sentence.

Newsweek reports David Steven Bell, 51, appeared in court on Monday for the incident that occurred outside of an Asheville mall last January. The assault went viral after cellphone footage showed Bell viciously punched a minor to the ground after her friends surrounded him for allegedly defending a woman in a bookstore. He pleaded guilty to one count of misdemeanor assault of a minor and one count of assault on a female.

Bell’s attorney, Andy Banzhoff, said in a statement that his client underwent treatment for a brain injury and suffered with PTSD before the incident.

“His actions were in an effort to defend himself against the perceived threat from a large pack of youth who had trapped and surrounded him”
