Mark Zuckerberg On Billionaires: ‘No One Deserves To Have That Much Money’

Last month, Bernie Sanders made a bunch of headlines after stating that there should be no billionaires. He made the comments while explaining his plan to tax the ultra-wealthy. He said in a tweet back in September, “There should be no billionaires. We are going to tax their extreme wealth and invest in working people.”

During a town hall event at the Facebook’s headquarters on Thursday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg, weighed in on the topic after an employee asked questions about Sanders’ comments. Zuckerberg, who is the fifth richest person in the world with many billions of dollars to his name, said he actually “understands” where Bernie Sanders is coming from when the Democratic presidential candidate says billionaires shouldn’t exist.

“I don’t know if I have an exact threshold on what amount of money someone should have, but on some level no one deserves to have that much money,” the Facebook (FB) CEO said Thursday. He continued, “I think if you do something that’s good, you get rewarded, but I do think some of the wealth that can be accumulated is unreasonable,” he said at the event.

Zuckerberg noted that he and his wife, Priscilla Chan, have pledged to divest much of their wealth over their lifetimes through philanthropy, The Post Notes.

“We’re funding science, for example,” he said. “And some people would say, ‘Is it fair that a group of wealthy people get to, to some degree, choose which science projects get worked on?’ I don’t know how to answer that exactly.”

“The alternative would be the government chooses all of the funding for all the stuff,” he said. “What I worry about a little bit when I hear sentiments like what the senator suggested is the suggestion that this should all be done publicly, I think, would deprive the market and world of a diversity of different attempts that can be taken.”
