Mexican Mayor Shot Dead On His First Day In Office

The newly-sworn-in mayor of Tlaxiaco, a town in Oaxaca state, was tragically killed on his first day of work.

Alejandro Aparicio Santiago, who had just taken office in Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca was on his way to his first assignment at City Hall on Tuesday when he was attacked by a group of gunmen. Santiago was with four other people when the ambushed happened.

According to reports, Santiago suffered a wound to his chest and was rushed to the hospital. However, the doctors were unable to save his life and he was pronounced dead shortly afterward.

The others were also wounded in the attack including a politician in the party of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, but reportedly do not have life-threatening injuries. As of right now, it is unclear how many gunmen attacked the group and the motive behind the crime is also unclear.

The state government announced the death on Twitter, writing, “Que en paz descanse” — Spanish for “Rest in peace,” according to NPR. The governor of Oaxaca Alejandro Murat promised a thorough investigation and said a suspect was already in custody.

The news of Mayor Santiago comes just on the heels of Mexican Governor Martha Erika Alonso‘s death. She died in a helicopter crash just days after being sworn. Her husband Rafael Moreno Valle, a federal senator and former governor of the state also died with her.
