A Democratic candidate who was seeking election to the Mississippi House of Representatives has killed himself after shooting his wife.
Carl Robinson, a Democratic candidate seeking election to the Mississippi House of Representatives has died in a murder-suicide after shooting his wife.
Robinson reportedly went to the Williams Medical Clinic in Potts Camp where his wife was working at the receptionist desk, shot her and then turned the gun on himself.
Sources say that this came after Robinson was served divorce papers by his wife Latoya Thompson.
“We found the shooter dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head,” Marshall County Sheriff Kenny Dickerson said in a statement. “He and his wife were in the process of a divorce. His wife was lying on the floor near his body.”
The couple had been married since 2014 but had filed for divorce in April according to court documents. According to legal records, both filed a joint complaint for divorce on April 26. At the time, only one lawyer was involved.
As authorities were trying to put Thompson on a medical helicopter, she died.
There was a witness to the incident who says Robinson pacing outside of the clinic with before the incident. Authorities say a 38-caliber Smith & Wesson pistol was recovered.
As for Robinson’s name on the Democratic primary ballot for the District 5 seat in the Mississippi House of Representatives, his name will remain there.
