Missy Elliott is now among those college graduates who have walked the stage to accept their degrees as she is given an honorary doctorate.
On saturday, Missy Elliott made history as she walked the stage and received an honorary doctorate degree from the Berklee College of Music.
With this honor, Missy became the very first hip hop artist to be presented with this honor alongside Justin Timberlake and Alex Lacamoire.
“This year’s honorary doctorate recipients are being recognized for their achievements and influences in music, and for their enduring global impact,” a statement from the school read.
Her new honorary degree is first on a long list of history-making moves that Missy will experience this year.
Missy, Justin, and Alex now join a long list of artists who have been awarded this honor including Duke Ellington, B.B. King, Aretha Franklin, and Quincy Jones
Missy is set to become the only female hip-hop artist to ever be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame this June.
“It’s amazing. To me, it’s important to have equality,” said Hall FO Fame chairman Nile Rodgers, who announced the decision in January of this year. “I’ve written with a lot of women songwriters, but not nearly enough. That’s sort of my secret goal — I want to have more women songwriters.”
Congrats to them all on this major accomplishment.
