Mom Behind Viral Heroin Overdose Picture Celebrates 3 Years Of Sobriety

#Socialites, do you remember the Indiana woman who went viral after being pictured slumped over the wheel with her infant son in the back seat, following a heroin overdose? Well, the mother recently took to social media to celebrate three years of sobriety.

Erika Hurt, now 28, spoke to Inside Edition and shared that her addiction to opioids started when she was just 15 years old. Hurt said she contracted a staph infection and was prescribed pain pills. When the prescription ran out, she continued buying pills off the street. She explained that her tolerance increased and shortly after she was introduced to heroin.

After her scary 2016 incident where she was photographed by police, unconscious behind the wheel while her hand still loosely gripping a syringe, she realized it was time to change and get some help after being revived by Narcan. Hurt managed to keep herself on the right track, not just for herself but for the sake of her son, and now she’s celebrating:

“Today marks THREE ENTIRE YEARS of sobriety for me! Y’all already know, but allow me to recap. 3 years ago I was receiving Narcan to bring me back to life after I had overdosed on heroin; all while my son, my mom, and her wife stood and watched. While those are such emotional moments for my family to recall, that’s really not what is MOST important today,” Hurt said in her caption over photos that taken as a collaboration between Ali Elizabeth Photography and Keywords Co.

She went on to say,

“What is really important today, is the fact that Narcan saved my life! Narcan kept me alive until I wanted to live! While I can admit that my son was unfortunately NOT enough to keep me sober then, he is my motivation today. Had Narcan not been available to me; or had someone who felt that I DIDNT DESERVE Narcan been there that day, I would have NEVER had the chance to get sober and my son would be growing up without ever knowing his mom.

I’ve truly enjoyed sharing my 3 years of recovery with you all! ♡
HUGE SHOUT OUT TO Ali Elizabeth Photography AND ESPECIALLY FOR HER WILLINGNESS AND OPENMINDEDNESS TO CAPTURE THESE PHOTOS FOR US!”
