While speaking with AL.com, Zakiya Milhouse shared that she did sign a permission form to let her son wear makeup in drama class. However, she didn’t expect to come home with the disturbing and very graphic painting on his head. She believes it was a culturally insensitive move by the school and shared a photo of her sons’ fake bullet wound on Facebook. Milhouse wrote in her post,

“So they did this in drama class and my boy said the teacher said it’s like he got shot. I don’t like that s ***! I don’t care if it’s Halloween or NOT! A bullet hole in the head.”

“This actually happens to our black young men. If you saw it in person, it looked real,” she said to the news site. The principal of Phillip’s Academy in Birmingham, Alabama eventually reached out to Milhouse after he became aware of the photo circulating online and apologized for the incident. The drama teacher who’s responsible for creating the fake bullet wound also apologized and admitted he initially didn’t anticipate anything wrong with the makeup.

“He didn’t think it was a real big deal,’ Milhouse said. He said he did paint on different kids, such as black eyes. He said was going to take it out of his lesson plan”

The Birmingham City Schools also issued a statement to AL.com.

“As a culturally responsive school system, Birmingham City Schools takes issues like this very seriously and does not condone the graphic nature of this lesson on special effects. We regret any issues and perceptions this incident may have caused, and this portion of the lesson will be removed from the unit.”
