A mother was sentenced to 14 years in prison for driving on a suspended license and being under the influence of alcohol when she crashed her SUV with her three young daughters inside.

FOX 5 reports that Mayra Alejandra Gonzalez, 30, is reported to have had a .29% blood-alcohol level when she drove head-on into an oncoming Jeep. Her 9-month-old daughter suffered a skull fracture and a brain bleed. Her 2-year-old daughter suffered facial injuries and her 8-year-old daughter had a broken bone.

The 57-year-old driver of the other vehicle had to have five surgeries for his injuries. Nobody was killed.

Deputy District Attorney Ramona McCarthy told the court that Gonzalez was drinking all day while she was driving around with her kids across San Diego.

“She put alcohol and what she wanted to do above the safety of her children and the safety of the community,” McCarthy said. Considering the condition of her then-9-month-old, who still uses a feeding tube to this day as a result of the crash. It’s  a miracle (Gonzalez) is not here on a murder charge.”

Following her sentencing, Gonzalez was very remorseful for her actions. Her sentence was harsher because she already had previous violations for DUI.

“My children are my world, my reason for living,” said Gonzalez, adding she was “very, very remorseful” for the incident.
