Three Muslim families were left embarrassed and ashamed after they were not allowed to board a New York City ferry because they were a “security issue.”

According to a discrimination complaint filed with the New York City Commission on Human Rights, the lawsuit asks for disciplinary action, a formal apology and compensatory damages for “humiliation, embarrassment, and severe emotional distress,” adding that not being able to board the ferry was based on discrimination and that the security concerns were an “after-the-fact false excuse.”

The incident occurred after the family planned to travel via the NYC ferry from the Wall Street pier to Brooklyn’s Pier 6. Some of the family members were wearing hijabs. However, when it was their turn to board, the ferry staff refused to let them on. A worker told tthe women that “security” had told him not to let them on.

The women were later told that they were denied entry because their toddlers were standing on the seats.

“[Their] entire day was ruined,” the complaint added. “[The families] were embarrassed and humiliated, especially since the incidents… occurred in public view of all ferry passengers.”

After waiting over two hours, they decided to cancel the trip.
