A New Jersey hospital confessed to giving a kidney transplant to the wrong patient this week.

According to the NY POST, surgeons at Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Camden made the error because both patients had similar names.

The 51-year-old patient who was given the kidney in error was also on a kidney transplant list, however, it was discovered that the organ went to the wrong patient because, “unusually, the individual who should have received the organ has the same name and is of similar age.”

The Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network investigated the incident. Both men are doing well, and the patient who was initially supposed to get the transplant received his on November 24. Luckily the kidneys were a match.

“All safety measures were validated and additional checks were put into place before any subsequent transplant procedures occurred,” the hospital said.

Virtua’s executive vice president and chief clinical officer, Reginald Blaber released a statement,

“We have a profound responsibility to people who literally place their lives in our hands. Mistakes of this magnitude are rare, and despite the unusual circumstances of similar patient identities, additional verification would have prevented this error.”
