New Law Mandates Later School Start Times In California

#Socialites, check this out! Middle and high school students in California are now required to begin their school days a little later than in the past, all thanks to a new law.

According to KCRA, Gov. Gavin Newsom recently signed legislation pushing back start times for high school and middle school students. Now, under the new law, middle schools can’t start the day before 8 a.m. and high schools can’t start the day before 8:30 a.m. Public schools will have to comply by July 1, 2022. However, as of right now, the law doesn’t impact elementary schools.

So what’s the reason? Well, a medical community argued that teenagers aren’t getting enough sleep with homework, after-school sports and jobs, and that later start times would allow them to get more rest and function better in classrooms, KCRA reports. It was also noted that later start times are said to lessen crash rates among teens driving to school and make them less likely to be absent.

Of course, there are people against the bill, arguing that it will greatly impact parents who need to be at work by 8 a.m. and that it would be a hardship to arrange for transportation for their kids.
