New York Teen Dies After Protecting Her Sister During Neighborhood Shooting

A Yonkers teen was fatally shot in the head while protecting her little sister during a neighborhood shooting.

According to the New York Post, Marilyn Cotto-Montanez,18, was walking with her nine-year-old to get art supplies Thursday evening when suddenly gunfire rang out near their home on Morningside Avenue. The teen grabbed her sister and took her to a safe area but was tragically shot in the head. Police reported that two groups of men had a confrontation prior to the shooting and started chasing each other. During the chase, the armed suspect started shooting and fired the fatal bullet towards Montanez.

Although first responders arrived at the scene and took the teen to a nearby trauma center, she succumbed to her wounds.

A relative said that the teen was known as an honor roll student and preparing to go to college.

“She was about to go to college to be a doctor. She was talking to Fordham University. There were a couple of campuses in Maryland she wanted to go to. I mean, she had options.

“She was that good with her grades. She was honor roll three times in a row.”

Police reported that the men involved in the shooting fled the scene but apprehended two suspects fo questioning. No charges were made.
