An Iowa 7-week-old baby girl is critically injured after a softball accidentally hit her on the head at a ball field.
According to the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, McKenna Hovenga suffered skull fractures, brain hemorrhaging and multiple seizures. Her family created a donation page on YouCaring.com for McKenna’s medical expenses.
Family member Laura Heise posted an update about McKenna’s condition:
“Currently McKenna is still heavily sedated and is still on the vent,”
“We’ve had a few issues here and there that have popped up, so the doctors are continually tweaking her meds. Thankfully we have had no seizure activity since yesterday morning and she is stable but critical.”

Heise added that the family does not blame anyone for the incident.
‘Accidents happen and this is just one horrible happenstance,”
The infant was with her parents at a ball field in Shell Rock. Her father Lee Hovenga was playing softball with his team when the incident happened. Heise explained what happened to McKenna on the donation page:

“Another pair of teams were playing and Lee was helping Kassy get situated with a blanket over her, so Kassy could breastfeed,”
“Lee had his back to the field and never saw the ball coming. The ball came over the fence — and either hit McKenna first or hit Kassy first. We’re really not sure as it happened so fast and Kassy was looking down at McKenna as she was feeding. Neither of them saw the ball as it came over the fence.”
McKenna was transported to Waverly Health Center and to St.Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota via helicopter.
The family has raised over $15,000 for McKenna’s medical treatment and other expenses.
