NY Officially Decriminalized Marijuana

Exciting news for pot smokers. Marijuana is now officially decriminalized in New York State!

Yup, you read that right! The new law which went into effect on Tuesday, decriminalizes possession of up to two ounces of marijuana. So what exactly does that mean? Residents across New York State can now publicly possess or smoke up to 2 ounces of marijuana without criminal penalties. However, if anyone is caught with more, they could be looking at a fine up to $200.

According to ABCNY, the measure also creates a mechanism to expunge the records for some past marijuana convictions. Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo, who signed the bill says it’s “long overdue.”

“This law is long overdue, and it is a significant step forward in our efforts to end this repressive cycle and ultimately mend our discriminatory criminal justice process once and for all,” Cuomo said in a statement.

He also said it will help communities of color that have been “disproportionately impacted” by the state’s marijuana laws over the past several decades.
