A woman nicknamed “Permit Betty” lost her job after a video of her actions went viral. She tried to report a street vendor selling goods on Market St. in San Francisco.
According to KRON, “Permit Betty” aka Rene Folena was fired from her job after the video was uploaded on social media. The man in the video accused Folena of harassing the street vendor but Folena says she was doing her job. Folena worked in outreach for Streetplus, a company that aims to help the community.
She stated she was on the phone with a community guide at her job to come inspect the vendor and help her get a one day permit. Folena added that she is half Mexican and half Irish and would never discriminate against others.
“I am sorry that I was doing my job by calling some to come over and help her. I am sorry that I did not make the phone call myself and give her the information”

A statement was released from her employer on Wednesday, explaining her termination from the company.
“An employee of a service provider misrepresented the YBCBD on Wednesday. That individual no longer works on behalf of the district. This individual was not a direct employee of the YBCBD. However, we take responsibility for anyone who works on our behalf. Everyone associated with the YBCBD is expected to follow our policies and adhere to our values of inclusivity and of treating people with compassion, respect and dignity.”
Folena says the video does not show the entire story and regrets that the company did not have her back.
