Plane Dumps Jet Fuel On School Playground, Injuring 17 Children

Several school children in California were injured after a Delta Airlines plane poured jet fuel over a playground early Tuesday.

CNN reports 17 children were injured at the playground of Park Avenue Elementary after jet fuel was dumped from Delta Flight 89 shortly before noon in Cudahy. The Los Angeles County Fire Department said a statement on Twitter that the children had minor injuries and six adults were also injured from the incident.

“BN 13 and 3 units on-scene elementary school assessing multiple patients after apparent fuel dump by aircraft on final approach to LAX hits playground. 70 firefighters and paramedics on-scene and committed to providing care for those injured. FFs working to confirm substance dropped by aircraft, although initial reports stated smell of jet fuel in area.”
Witness Alan De Leon recorded the moment the plane poured out the jet fuel moments before it entered Los Angeles International Airport and said he smelled the substance along with feeling irritation in his eye. A report from the Federal Aviation Administration said Delta Flight 89 was bound for Shanghai, China but had to return back to LAX due to an emergency. They did not confirm the jet fuel being released.
The Los Angeles Unified School District said their staff was checking each classroom and a hazardous materials team was inspecting the campus.
