NBC News reports that 20-year-old Eric Black Jr. was arrested Saturday night in Texas for allegedly fatally shooting Jazmine Barnes as she was riding in a car with her family, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said. Sheriff’s officials said they have filed a capital murder charge against Black after he was identified based on a tip.

It was said that Black was taken into custody without incident in Harris County and admitted to taking part in the shooting. Investigators also shared that they were continuing to search for evidence that could possibly lead them to other suspects.

While many people including the victim’s mother LaPorsha Washington believes this was a hate crime, investigators say they do not believe Jazmine’s family was the intended target and they were possibly shot at as a result of mistaken identity.

Jazmine was shot and killed in the east part of Houston on Dec. 30, while riding in a car with her mother and three siblings. A white man in a red pickup truck pulled up beside the car and opened fire, police said. Jazmine died at the scene. Her mother and her 6-year-old sister were both injured.

The shooting has sparked national outrage on social media and in Houston. Over a thousand people rallied on Saturday near where the shooting happened, The New York Times reports. They chanted “Justice for Jazmine” and “No peace, no justice.” Former NBA player Shaquille O’Neal and a Houston police officer have stepped up and offered to pay for the girl’s funeral. In addition to that, Houston Texans star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins said he would pledge his playoff check to help the family and effort to find the suspects.
