Police Officer Aaron Dean, Who Fatally Shot Atatiana Jefferson Resigns

During a news conference, Interim Police Chief Ed Kraus announced that the officer who killed 28-year-old Atatiana Jefferson in her own home, has resigned. Now, Kraus said he intended to fire Officer Aaron Dean on Monday, however, the officer tendered his resignation first.

According to NBC, the officer faces criminal charges as well as possible civil rights violations. It was noted that he “no longer has the protections of state civil service law,” Kraus said.

The latest update comes just hours after the family of victim Atatiana Jefferson called for the officer who killed her to be fired and an an outside investigation.

“This man murdered someone. He should be arrested,” Darius Carr, Jefferson’s brother, said at a news conference.

As we previously reported, a neighbor had called the police to do a welfare check around 2:30 am on Saturday because her front door was left open. Police said the officer saw someone near a window inside the home and drew his duty weapon and fired after “perceiving a threat.”

However, her family’s attorney, S Lee Merritt, said the unnamed officer’s bodycam footage showed the cop “didn’t have time to perceive a threat. That’s murder” The parents of the black 28-year-old aspiring doctor are now speaking out for the first time on her death, calling it ”senseless.”
