Kamille “Cupcake” McKinney’s cause of death was revealed during Friday’s court appearance for the two suspects charged for her kidnapping and murder.
According to PEOPLE, McKinney died of asphyxiation by suffocation and was killed the same day she was kidnapped from a birthday party on October 12. Her body was found 10 days later in a dumpster by a nearby landfill. The two suspects, Patrick Devone Stallworth and his girlfriend, Derick Irisha Brown, were charged with the capital murder of a child under the age of 14. Prosecutors say the pair could face the death penalty if convicted for Cupcake’s death.
During the hearing, Stallworth allegedly told the judge, “I don’t understand why I was being charged with the murder of this child,” after he was asked if he had any questions. Prior to the murder charge, Stallworth was charged with four counts of possession of lewd material of persons under the age of 17 and three counts of the intention to distribute obscene material. The disturbing images were captured on his cellphone.

Brown has a previous case from July 2018 when she allegedly kidnapped her three children and led police on a chase before hitting a motorist and a sheriff’s SUV. She was charged with three counts of kidnapping, second-degree assault, and reckless endangerment. Her probation was revoked after she was charged for McKinney’s murder.

The couple does not have a relationship with Cupcake or her family. Police say the suspects may have seen the toddler and used the opportunity to kidnap her while she was at the birthday party. Her funeral will be held at the New Beginnings Christian Ministry on Sunday in Birmingham.
