Study Shows Police Use-Of-Force Is Leading Cause Of Death For Black Men In America

A new analysis by PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in the United of America) shows that the sixth leading cause of death for Black men and boys in America is police violence.

Following closely behind cancer and heart disease, police-related fatalities is listed as a leading cause of death for African American men ages 25 to 29; with 1 in 1,000 men and boys expected to die at the hands of police.

Additionally, the study released earlier this month shows that African American men are more than twice as likely as their white peers to die from police use-of-force, with Latino men and boys, Black women and girls, and Native American men, women and children following behind.

Rutgers University sociologist and study leader Frank Edwards says, “That 1-in-1,000 number struck us as quite high. That’s better odds of being killed by police than you have of winning a lot of scratch-off lottery games.”
