A former Philadelphia university professor used $200,000 of federal research funds at various strip clubs for 10 years.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Drexel University paid $190,000 to avoid a lawsuit from the Justice Department after being forced to settle with federal prosecutors after the former head of the electrical engineering department, Chikaodinaka Nwankpa, used the funds to have a good time at topless bars in the city. Federal prosecutors noted during the hearing that Nwankpa listed the bills from Club Risque and Cheerleaders as “goods and services” from 2007 to 2017.
After he was caught by university officials, Nwankpa resigned from his position and agreed to pay for the $55,328 bill in 2017.
A spokesperson from the prosecutor’s office called the act “an example of flagrant and audacious fraud.”
“The agencies providing these grant funds expect them to be used towards advancements in energy and naval technology for public benefit, not for personal entertainment.”
