Racist Who Dragged Black Man With Truck Scheduled To Be Executed This Week
John William King, the racist man responsible for killing James Byrd Jr. back in 1998, is scheduled to be executed this Wednesday.
According to the Associated Press King murdered Byrd back in 1998 in a premeditated attack. The sadistic murder was carried out against Byrd on June 7, 1998, in Jasper, Texas.
King and his fellow white accomplices lured Byrd in by offering him a ride. Once he was in the vehicle, they savagely beat him before chaining him to the back of their pickup truck. The men then proceeded to drag Byrd’s body for over 3 miles on a road.
Sadly, Byrd was alive for two of those miles before his body was torn apart. His dismembered torso, legs and left arm were found in front of an African-American church. Prosecutors strongly believe the motive was racial.
Lawrence Russell Brewer, who was one of the men involved was executed back in 2011. Shawn Allen Berry, the other accomplice is serving life in prison.
Byrd’s murder has been noted as one of the most gruesome hate crimes in US history. The crime sparked outrage and a cry for racial equality. His death led to the passage of state and federal hate crimes laws, including the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevent Act.
Following Byrd’s death, his friends and family created the Byrd Foundation for Racial Healing.
