Rihanna Talks Trump & Why She Turned Down Super Bowl Halftime Show: ‘I Just Couldn’t Be a Sellout’

In a new interview for Vogue‘s November cover story, the singer talked about all things Ri like her upcoming album, her Fenty line and also her love life. While doing that, the superstar weighed in on a couple of trending topics including her ditching the Super Bowl Halftime gig in support of Colin Kaepernick, and thoughts on controversial President, Donald Trump.

When asked if she had declined the halftime show in solidarity with the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, without hesitation Rihanna, 31, responded, “Absolutely.”

“I couldn’t dare do that,” she continued. “For what? Who gains from that? Not my people. I just couldn’t be a sellout. I couldn’t be an enabler. There are things within that organization that I do not agree with at all, and I was not about to go and be of service to them in any way.”

It was previously reported back in 2018 that she declined, but the singer did not publicly confirm those reports until now. The football player is known for starting the #TakeAKnee movement back in 2016, where he declined to stand for the national anthem at games to protest of police brutality and the racial injustices faced by people of color in America. Rihanna has always commended him for his bold move and stood by his movement.

During the interview, Rihanna also responded to recent mass shootings that Donald Trump has blamed on a “mental illness problem.” While doing that, she labeled the commander in chief the “most mentally ill human being in America.”

“It is devastating,” Rihanna said in the wide-ranging interview. She added, “People are being murdered by war weapons that they legally purchase. This is just not normal. That should never, ever be normal.”

The El Paso shooter who opened fire at a Walmart allegedly wrote a racist, anti-immigrant manifesto that was published just before the attack and warned of a Latino “invasion.”

“And the fact that it’s classified as something different because of the color of their skin? It’s a slap in the face. It’s completely racist,” Rihanna told Vogue.

“Put an Arab man with that same weapon in that same Walmart and there is no way that Trump would sit there and address it publicly as a mental health problem,” the 31-year-old Barbados-born performer added. “The most mentally ill human being in America right now seems to be the president.”
