Russia Banned From 2020 Olympics & World Cup Over Doping Scandal
Welp, don’t expect to see Russia in the Olympics or World Cup as they’ve just been banned from competing!
According to CNN, The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) unanimously agreed to ban Russia from both of the major international sporting competitions for four years over doping non-compliance. It was said that WADA’s executive committee voted in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Monday and concluded that officials in a Moscow anti-doping laboratory had tampered with data.
The tampering reportedly included planting fake evidence and deleting files linked to positive doping tests that could have helped identify drug cheats. On top of that, system messages were also fabricated in an effort to hamper the work of WADA investigators.
An agency spokesperson said the executive committee’s decision to punish Russia with a ban was unanimous.
ESPN notes that the Russian Anti-Doping Agency has only 21 days to appeal the sanctions. Now, if it does, the case will be referred to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, WADA has said.
