A group of registered Georgia sex offenders are suing the Butts County Sheriff’s Office for placing “Warning! No Trick-or-Treat at this address!!” signs in front of their yards to prevent young kids from trick-or-treating there ahead of Halloween.

The practice initially started last year to ensure that children stayed safe and away from these homes,

“My office took precautions and placed signs indicating ‘No Trick or Treat’ at each registered sex offender’s residence in the County,” Sheriff Gary Long said. “This was done to ensure the safety of our children.”

According to WSBTV, attorney’s for the sex offenders said that the deputies violated the law by trespassing to put up signs without permission. They also argue that forcing the men to leave the signs up in their yards was parallel to “compelling speech,” which against the Constitution’s First Amendment. They believe that their clients have already paid their dues to society and shouldn’t be singled out.

The sex offenders are asking for the matter to be taken to trial and for a jury to award the plaintiffs compensation for stress, fear and humiliation.
