A ski lift at the Gudauri resort malfunctioned and injured ten people. The lift sent people flying from their seats two times its normal speed. The resort is located in the country Georgia, a mountainous region bordering Russia.
Witnesses recorded the horrific scene as skiers were flying off their seats. The ski lift was running at high speeds in reverse while other skiers on the lift jumped to safety, preventing more injuries.
Skier Iryna Iadak was with her boyfriend and told CNN about the chaos that ensued:
“The movement of the lift stopped and a minute later we drove back.The speed increased, it was out of control. The lift could not be stopped. People began to jump from different altitudes, panic began. Many did not manage to jump off and were thrown out from the impact.”
Mountain Resorts Development Company reported that the injured were taken to a clinic located in the resort. The company confirmed the ski lift’s malfunction resulted in ten people being injured. Among the injured was a pregnant woman.
“According to initial information, Sadzele ski lift in Gudauri stopped working, chairs crashed into each other with riders suspended in the air, causing health injury of medium gravity.”
“As a result, according to preliminary data, 10 people were injured.”
The ski lift’s manufacturer, Doppelmayr Garaventa is investigating the incident.
