Steph Curry Helps Raise $21,000 For Nia Wilson’s Family

On Tuesday, Golden State Warriors Star Stephen Curry helped raise thousands of dollars through his SC30 Showcase Game for the family of Nia Wilson, the 18-year-old who was tragically killed after being stabbed in the neck by 27-year-old John Cowell.

Curry streamed the event on his official Facebook page and encouraged fans to donate over the course of the night. Plenty of donations poured in and the NBA player managed to successfully raise $21,025.

This meant a lot to Wilson’s family, especially the victim’s father, Ansar El Muhammad.

“This is what’s keeping me and my family so strong,” he said according to NBC Bay Area. “All the support from giants like Stephen Curry and abroad, that’s what’s keeping us strong at the moment.”

Wilson, 18, was fatally stabbed on July 22 while walking the platform of a Bay Area Rapid Transit BART station with her sister Letifah. The pair were on their way home when John Cowell stabbed both Wilson and her sister in the neck. Letifah survived the attack, but Nia died from her wounds moments later.

While many people call the incident a racially motivated attack, Wilson’s godfather says whatever Cowell’s motive was it still won’t bring back their loved one.

“I don’t know if it was racist,” he said. “I don’t know if it was random. I don’t know these crazies. I don’t know what it is. I know that my baby is dead. And it’s a senseless death.”
