On Monday, Tiffany Moss was found guilty of starving her 10-year-old stepdaughter to death and then trying to burn the girl’s emaciated body in a trash can.

Moss appeared in front of a judge yesterday but jurors told Superior Court Judge George Hutchinson they had reached an “impasse” on the sentence and went home to “sleep on” the decision. They resumed deliberations at 9 a.m and recommended the death penalty for Moss. Judge George Hutchinson signed off on their sentence.

Channel 2’s Tony Thomas said that Moss sat emotionless as the judge sentenced her to death for her 2013 crime. He said she did not speak except to answer “no” to his questions. It was also said that Moss, 36, acted as her own lawyer in the capital case. She offered no defense, called on no witnesses and didn’t offer an opening statement or closing argument.

The jury deliberated for less than three hours before convicting her of murder, felony murder, cruelty to a child and trying to conceal a death.

Moss’ husband Eman, is already serving life in prison for his daughter’s death. As part of his plea deal, he had to testify against his wife. On Thursday he told a judge why agreed to try to hide his daughter’s body when they discovered her dead.

“I’m not God, but I was trying to fix something irreversible,” Eman Moss said. “I guess I was trying to fix the problem that I couldn’t fix. I couldn’t save her. I couldn’t save my daughter.”
