An Indiana couple wants answers after their son’s teacher gave him an award for “Most Annoying Male.”
According to ABC 7, Rick and Estella Castejon were shocked after their 11-year-old son was given the “most annoying” award by his teacher at the Bailly Preparatory Academy in Gary. Akalis is a non-verbal fifth-grade student with autism and Rick said in a statement that he did not want to cause a scene since his son does not know what the award means.
“I didn’t want to cause a scene with other parents there, so I left the award on the table and tried walking away, but the teacher came back and said Akalis forgot his award. When they called him up he was just excited to get a gold star because it was shiny,”
Estella went to speak with the principal on the following day to discuss why the teacher would give Akalis the award but never received an explanation or apology:
“You’d think one would know and understand the conditions of autism and have more patience to deal with children who suffer from autism.”
The school district has apologized for the teacher’s actions and said in a statement:
“The Gary Community School Corporation does not condone this type of behavior and will continue to put the safety and well-being of our students first.”
