A Kenyan schoolgirl committed suicide last week after she was ridiculed by her teacher for having her period and ruining her uniform.
According to the BBC, the teen’s mother said in a statement that her daughter ended her own life after her teacher called the 14-year-old “dirty” for ruining her uniform and told her to stand outside in Kabiangek.
“She had nothing to use as a pad. When the blood stained her clothes, she was told to leave the classroom and stand outside,”
The woman added that her daughter told her what happened at school, but she took her own life when she went out for water. The teen’s tragic death has prompted 200 parents to protest outside of the school demanding answers.
The country signed a bill in 2017 for schools to provide free sanitary napkins for female students. However, many of the schools have not implemented this law as of today. Due to the protests, the school has closed down and a statement was not released by a representative.
