According to The Miami Herald, Fulton will be launching an official campaign for Miami-Dade County Commission on Monday. She released a statement Saturday sharing why she’s running for county commissioner and what she looks forward to accomplishing with a position in District 1.

“My time as a public servant began 30 years ago at Miami-Dade County. Since 2012, I have advocated tirelessly to empower our communities and make them safer. But the work is not done,” said Fulton.

She went on to say,

“Our county must continue moving forward so our families are safe from violence, can afford to live in Miami-Dade, and have access to good paying jobs,” said Fulton. “I am ready to take on these issues and many others in county government.”

As we previously reported, Fulton’s son Trayvon was shot and killed back in 2012. Martin was returning to his father’s home after a trip to a convenience store when he was shot by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer. Zimmerman was acquitted of all charges in 2013. Trayvon was just 17-years-old. Since his death, Fulton has dedicated her life to advocacy and even founded the Trayvon Martin Foundation with her family.
