Trump Planning To Use Puerto Rico, California Disaster Funds To Build Border Wall

Donald Trump is determined to get this border wall between the U.S. and Mexico and he’s willing to do anything to make it happen. That even includes taking money from disaster relief funds that have been put aside for civil works projects for places like like Puerto Rico and California.

According to The Los Angeles Times, officials have given President Trump a plan to divert funds designated for Army Corps of Engineers projects in California and Puerto Rico to help pay for a wall along the southern border, a leading member of Congress said Thursday. He was presented with the idea on Thursday while on his way to the Texas border.

The new plan has not been put under contract yet according to Rep. John Garamendi (D-Walnut Grove). But, it is most likely to happen if Trump declares a national emergency, which he said Thursday he is strongly inclined to do.

Administration officials also said on Thursday that they were looking at a range of government accounts that Trump potentially could tap into, but would not comment specifically on which projects were being eyed.

This move comes after Congress did not fund Trump the money for his border wall, causing a shut down of the government which has lasted for 3 weeks. The president has made it clear that the shutdown could last as long as a year if Congress does not cooperate with him.
