UPDATE: Fort Worth officer freed from jail after being charged for killing Atatiana Jefferson
As we previously reported, Aaron Dean, the Fort Worth officer who fatally shot 28-year-old Atatiana Jefferson in her home this weekend was jailed on a murder charge Monday.
In a bodycam video which has been released to the public showed Dean at Atatiana’s home where he was supposed to do a welfare check on her after a neighbor reported that her door was left open. When he arrived, he saw someone peeking out the window and without identifying himself as a cop, Dean fired his gun claiming he perceived a threat. Atatiana’s parents and the police department agreed that the cop could have handled this situation in a completely different way.
Following Dean resigning from his job, he was booked Monday evening into the Tarrant County Jail, where his bail was set at $200,000. According to the latest update, he was released on bond at 9:15 p.m., a spokeswoman with the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Department said.
The family is relieved Dean was arrested, but they said more needs to be done to change the police department, CBS News correspondent Omar Villafranca reports. We spoke to a retired Fort Worth officer who echoed that sentiment.
