UPDATE: Twitter Said It Will Not Delete The Accounts Of Dead People

As we previously reported, Twitter recently announced that it will begin deleting accounts that have been inactive for more than six months, unless they log in before an 11 December deadline. It will be the first time Twitter has removed inactive accounts on such a large scale. The site explained that they were making this move because users who do not log-in were unable to agree to its updated privacy policies.

The company explained,

“As part of our commitment to serve the public conversation, we’re working to clean up inactive accounts to present more accurate, credible information people can trust across Twitter. Part of this effort is encouraging people to actively log-in and use Twitter when they register an account, as stated in our inactive accounts policy,” a spokesperson told The Verge by email. “We have begun proactive outreach to many accounts who have not logged into Twitter in over six months to inform them that their accounts may be permanently removed due to prolonged inactivity.”

Now, many people were left with many questions following the news. Some wanted to know if Twitter accounts once owned by users who have died would also be scrubbed from the social media platform. The company made it clear that it won’t happen.

“We’ve heard you on the impact that this would have on the accounts of the deceased. This was a miss on our part. We will not be removing any inactive accounts until we create a new way for people to memorialize accounts.”
