Versace Issues Apology After Labeling Hong Kong As A Country On T-Shirt

Versace has issued an apology to China after labeling the regions of Hong Kong and Macau as independent countries on one of their T-shirts.

The BBC reports the luxury brand received backlash on social media from Chinese consumers after labeling the two regions as independent territories. The T-shirt design featured city-country pairs such as Tokyo-Japan, Atlanta-USA, New York-USA but missed the mark with Hong Kong-Hong Kong and Macau-Macao. Donatella Versace issued out a personal apology on the brand’s Twitter page in English and Chinese:

“I am deeply sorry for the unfortunate recent error that was made by our company and that is being currently discussed on various social media channels. Never have I wanted to disrespect China’s national sovereignty and this is why I wanted to personally apologize for such inaccuracy and any distress that it might have caused. “

The error has caused Versace’s new ambassador, Yang Mi, to drop her contract with the brand.

“China’s territorial integrity and sovereignty are sacred and inviolable at all times,”

Other brands, Coach and Givenchy, have received backlash as of Monday for misrepresenting Chinese territories. Another brand ambassador, Liu Wen, ended her contract after Coach listed Taiwan as a country on one of their garments.

“I apologize to everyone for the damage that I have caused as a result of my less-careful choice of brand!”
