The days of looking at a new car and saying “slug bug” are coming to an end as the popular Volkswagen Beetle is making its last model.
Rumors of the Volkswagen discontinuing their popular Beetle’s have been circulating for some time now. But on Thursday, Volkswagen announced that they will stop Beetle production in 2019.
While the news is sad, the good news is that the company will be releasing a final edition of the iconic car to mark its final series.
“As we move to being a full-line, family-focused automaker in the US and ramp up our electrification strategy with the MEB platform, there are no immediate plans to replace [the Beetle],” Volkswagen of America president Hinrich J. Woebcken said in a statement.
With the way that cars are going, electric vehicles are the new wave. So while Woebcken says that they will not replace the Beetle, he never said that they wouldn’t improve it to make it electric.
The VW will offer the final edition Beetle in white, black, gray, blue and a few other colors.
The Final Edition coupe starts at $23,045 for the SE and $25,995 for the SEL, while convertible models will cost $27,295 and $29,995, respectively.
