Brandon Cory Lecroy, 26, of Greenwood, was arrested after an anonymous source tipped off authorities that he had reached out to an unidentified white supremacist organization seeking help to hang his neighbor from a tree and leave a burning cross in his yard.

An F.B.I. agent posed as a hit man and contacted Mr. Lecroy, who told the agent over the phone, “$500 and he’s a ghost,” according to the arrest warrant affidavit. Once the agent received the initial payment of $100, he was taken into custody.

“The fact that he reached out to the KKK—this is not a low-functioning individual,” assistant U.S. Attorney William Watkins said. “It’s telling that to get a black person eliminated, he turned to the KKK […] He doesn’t call a biker gang. It all boils down to this: He sought to eliminate his neighbor based on his race.”

On Friday, he was given a maximum 10-year sentence and three years of court-ordered supervision.
