Woman Dies After Being Punched For Calling Man The N-Word
A jury is considering a 10-year prison sentence after convicting a northern Virginia man of murder for punching and killing a woman who called him the n-word.
27-year-old Robert Coleman was convicted Tuesday of second-degree murder. A judge will sentence Coleman in May. He can impose a sentence no higher than the jury’s recommendation, according to reports.
Prosecutors said Coleman and victim Fidelia Montiel-Benitez were strangers when they got into an argument at an Alexandria convenience store. Surveillance video shows the argument and Coleman following his victim outside and punching her. Prosecutors say she was knocked unconscious, struck her head and died.
The Washington Post reports that Coleman says he became enraged after Montiel-Benitez called him the n-word. However, prosecutors said she didn’t speak English well enough to use the slur.
“Verbal arguments should never devolve into physical altercations because physical altercations often bring devastating consequences,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Bryan Porter in a statement following the jury’s verdict. “So it was here, where a random encounter and brief argument inside of a store led to inexplicable violence.”
Coleman is being held at Alexandria’s Truesdale Adult Detention Center and faces sentencing May 24.
