A Scottish woman says she was terminated from her job after asking for a day off to mourn the loss of her beloved pet dog.
According to BBC News, Emma McNulty, 18, requested a day off from her part-time job at a sandwich shop so she could mourn the sudden passing of her Yorkshire Terrier, Millie. However, her employee told McNulty that she needed to find someone to cover her shift or risk being fired from her job.
“I thought my employer would show a bit of compassion. Instead I was told to find cover and that if I didn’t come in I would risk dismissal
“When I told them I couldn’t find a replacement I was told not to show up for any other shifts and that the boss would be in touch.”
The Glasgow native created a petition to fight for pet owners to take days off for bereavement without risking job loss.
“I was sacked on the same day as I lost my dog,. Millie was 14 and I am 18, so I don’t remember a time when she wasn’t part of my life. We did everything together. I was so close to her and she was my best pal.”
The petition has 700 signatures so far.
