Woman in ICE Custody Gives Birth to Stillborn Baby

A 24-year-old Honduran woman who is currently being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement is reported to have gone into premature labor and delivered a stillborn child.

ICE officials state that when she was initially detained in Texas, the woman was already six months pregnant. The woman’s identity is currently being withheld to protect her privacy.

“A woman losing her child is yet another horrific example of DHS’s inability to treat migrants with the dignity and respect they deserve,” Erika Andiola, the advocacy chief at Refugee and Immigrant Center said. “Pregnant migrant women should not be locked up.Keeping them in jail is a Trump administration policy. It’s inhumane and we can’t let it stand.”

The ICE has faced much criticism for the way they are treating detainees. Following an executive order from Donald Trump, the policy for detaining pregnant women changed from “presumption of release for all pregnant detainees” to arresting pregnant woman depending on their individual case.
The woman is currently in custody, pending a medical release.
