A Maryland woman nearly went blind after wearing mascara for 25 years. The result of not removing the mascara from her lashes caused solid black lumps to form under her eyelids.
The Daily Mail Australia reports Theresa Lynch,50, suffered from eye irritation, discharge, and an unpleasant sensation beneath her eyelids. She took over the counter products to relieve her symptoms but they did not solve her prolonged issue. After seeking medical help, doctors explained to Lynch that she had hard calcified bumps called concretions, developing under her eyelids.
Lynch described how the lumps developed under her eyelid and made her feel uncomfortable:
‘The lumps were embedded so deep that particles were building up on top of each other.I was so uncomfortable. My eyelids were swollen and heavy because I left it for so long.’
Lynch underwent a 90-minute procedure to have the calcified bumps removed from her eyelids.

Dr. Dana Robaei examined Lynch’s eyelids and said her condition was not like anything she has seen before.
‘When Dr Robaei pulled my eyelid back, she said: “Oh my god.. In my whole career I have seen anything this”.
‘She could see the whites of my eyes were glassy and bloodshot.’

Dr.Robaei and Lynch wanted to spread awareness about the dangers of makeup if not handled properly. Since Lynch did not wash the mascara off her eyelids for years, small clumps of unwashed mascara developed under them.
‘Every time Theresa was blinking these bumps were rubbing on the surface of the eye and they pose a risk to her vision.
‘If the scratch on the surface of the eye got infected, there is a risk this could be a potentially blinding but that would be rare.’
‘Not many women are treating the removal of their mascara seriously.. You must be meticulous.
