A history teacher from Texas says he was ordered to remove his anti-Trump license plate from his car after people filed complaints to the DMV.

According to the New York Post, Jerry Balkenbush,43, had permission from the Texas DMV to have his license plate say “JAIL 45” due to his views about President Donald Trump. However, Balkenbush was ordered to remove the license plate 30 days after he was initially approved by the DMV due to complaints from Fort Worth residents.

“My license plate is peaceful. It does not harm anybody. If we can’t protest the government, then what direction are we headed towards?”

Texas law states that the DMV is allowed to remove license plates that display an offensive or derogatory message. Over 3,800 license plates were rejected in 2018 were focused on people’s views about President Trump.

“I really feel like it was a violation of my freedom of speech against the government.”

Balkenbush and his wife were receiving threats from various internet trolls after his story was shared by local media.

“I did not foresee the hate coming, the nasty words and profanity towards me and towards my wife. I feel like this is the new normal in our politics.”
